Rules have maintained a distinction between social media intermediary and significant social media intermediary (over 50 lakh users) based on number of users. This will enable small social media startups and innovators to grow with lesser compliance burden.
New rules empower women and aims to improve their experience on social media. Intermediaries will have to remove or disable access of those users, within 24hours, who push partial or full nudity, sexual act in the nature of impersonation or morphed images etc. #ResponsibleFreedom
Intermediaries, including social media intermediaries, need to set up public grievances redressal mechanisms so as to attend to grievances of users. This will empower the users who had no remedy till now. Firms need to appoint Compliance and Grievance officer.
Social media platforms will have to inform the user in case they decide to remove any content posted by the user. User will get an opportunity to dispute that move. This gives a fair opportunity to users against existing arbitrary actions by platforms.
Good to see the government come up with a progressive institutional mechanism for all OTT platforms. The Code of Ethics and 3 tier self regulation would go a long way in creating a level playing field for print, cable network and digital media.
