There was no WAQF before 1954. Most of it was just abandoned land containing mosques which were built on top of temples.
It was in 1954 that Nehru created a WAQF board and handed over the land to them. It was 6 lakh crore acres in the beginning. Now it is 8 lakh crore.

There was a Kashmiri Hindu poet named Sarvanand Kaul Premi.
He was an Urdu poet. He was so secular that he kept a Quran in his prayer room and taught at a local Madarassa. He prayed in Dargahs.
When time came, the local Muslims, who were his students, dragged him from his house. They killed him and his son. They hanged the bodies from a tree for everyone to see.
What does this event teach us
This picture of a ruined Gandharan temple was taken in 1878.
This temple is known as "Ali Masjid".
They simply occupied and renamed the temple. They had not bothered to even remove the idol ruins.
This tells the story of "what happened to Gandhara" more than anything.
